Smolensk - an ancient Russian town, was first mentioned in the Ustyuzhsky chronicle under the year 862. One of the most remarkable fortifications and architectural monuments of the city is the Smolensk fortress wall with XVIth-XVIIth-century towers, built by Prince Vladimir Svytoslavich in the late Xth century as a defence against the Petchenegs. In the XIIth century Smolensk was the center of an independent principality.
