The Russian Academy of Sciences was founded in 1724 by Peter the Great. In its early years it was located in Petr Shafirov's house in Peterburgskaya Storona and in 1728 it moved to Vasilyevsky Ostrov. In 1783-1789 a new building was built for the Academy of Sciences from a design by architect Giacomo Quarenghi. An example of late classicism, it is an organic part of the architecture of St. Petersburg's University Embankment. Among the Russian members of the Academy were Mikhail Lomonosov, Leonard Euler, Vasily Y. Struve, Alexander Vostokov, Pafnuty Chebyshev, Alexander Butlerov, Sergei Solovyev and Ivan Pavlov and its foreign members included Voltaire, Diderot, Kant, Goethe, Darwin, Planck and Pascal. a view of the Academy of Sciences building in St. Petersburg with two sailing ships and a boat in the foreground, above it - the inscription "САНКТ-ПЕТЕРБУРГ" (ST.
