On 1868 he freed his slaves and invited them to join him to fight for Cuban Independence; is known as "Grito de Yara" ("Yara Cry"). --- Yara is a small town placed on south east of Cuba, where on 1512 Hatuey, a Taino chief was burnt in the stake for rebelling against Spanish domination; is considered as Cuba's First National Hero.
