This is the reason for the "official" date of 1816, as last time was completed. Originally was named as parochial church of Santiago de Cuba village (Iglesia Parroquial de la villa de Santiago de Cuba), or St. Catherine hermitage (Ermita de Santa Catalina). On 1522 is declared cathedral and first building was completed on 1526; on Jan. 16th. 1986, is declared as National Monument. Front wall has been modified and changed several times, and how shows 2 big statues, one of Padre de las Casas - Fray Bartolomé de las Casas, who was a Spanish priest strong defender of the natives rights, and the other of Cristobal Colon, discoverer of America on 10/12/1492, and discovered Cuba island 15 days later, on his first voyage.
