Emil Grigoryevich Gilels (1916-1985) was a Soviet pianist, a National Artist of the USSR. Awarded first prize in the Eugène Ysaӱe Competition in Brussels (1938) and second prize in the Vienna International Piano Competition (1936). Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Music in London and Honorary Professor of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest.
