The Polish Scouting is a Polish social and educational movement based (at the moment of its founding) on the British scouting. The values that are central to the movement are: service, self-development and brotherhood. The guiding principles for all the scouts are the Scouts Promise and the Scout Law, while the guiding principles for the Cub Scouts are the Cub Scout Promise and the Cub Scout Law. At present, due to the existence of many varieties of the movement both at home and internationally, the name harcerstwo is used to denote the Polish variety.
The movement also includes scout organizations working in Poland and abroad (among the Polish diaspora) on the basis of the principles mentioned above and the unique methods of the movement.
It is accepted that the movement began in 1910, and strictly speaking in the period between September 1910 (the creation of the first patrol) and 22 May 1911 (the creation of the first packs). Traditionally, it is said that the founders of the movement are Andrzej Małkowski and his wife Olga Drahonowska-Małkowska. The difference between the “classic” scouting founded by general Robert Baden-Powell and the Polish movement was summarized by Andrzej Małkowski in the following words: harcerstwo is scouting plus independence, which emphasizes the unique priorities of the Polish movement.
