On January 27, 1945 the Soviet troops liberated the town of Oświęcim and the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. The camp was filled with approximately 5,000 critically ill prisoners of various nationalities. The first aid was provided by the Russian soldiers, nurses and the nuns from the Sister Seraphita monastery. In the first days after the liberation, the area of the concentration camp was also visited by the citizens of Oświęcim as well as people from more remote areas of Poland in search of their relatives and friends while bringing humanitarian aid to the liberated prisoners whose bad health condition did not allow them to leave the camp.
A silver coin commemorating the 65th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp by the Soviet Army.
Obverse: at the top the image of the sign over the entry gate to the camp: ARBEIT MACHT FREI (Work makes you free), below the image of a fragment of the post and the barbwire.
Reverse: in the center the image of the bust of Witold Pilecki – a voluntary prisoner of the Auschwitz concentration camp over the background of the image of the camp fence and the fragment of the watchtower.
In the lower part an inscription KL Auschwitz and the number 4859 – a camp prisoner number of Witold Pilecki.
