Czesław Niemen (born Czesław Juliusz Wydrzycki, 1939–2004), an illustrious Polish composer, instrumentalist and singer, considered to be one of the most important representatives of the Polish popular music. At first his interests centred on beat and soul music, then on rock, progressive, jazz-rock and electronic music. His musical ouvre is extensive as well as stylistically and generically varied; it ranges from popular songs to sophisticated and complex compositions, from big beat to rock avant-garde, from the so-called “pure music” to works used as soundtrack in films and theatrical plays. He published tens of records; some of his songs are now evergreens. Niemen was also engaged in the production of recordings, both from the technical and musical point of view. He was also an excellent columnist – for many years he wrote texts for “Tylko Rock” music magazine. Finally, he was a talented computer graphics artist.
