The beginnings of the Polish winged cavalry (the Hussars) date back to the period between the 15th and the 16th century. The first Hussars were Serbs and Hungarians that had come to Poland to fight the Turks. They served for pay as a regular cavalry; among their first successes was the battle of Klecko in 1506 in which they defeated considerable forces of the Tatars.
