The sand mole-rat is a very rare rodent endemic to the northern Black Sea region-the sands on the left bank of the lower reaches of Dnieper in the Kherson Region. It is a protected species. The reverse: the picture of a sand mole-rat. The inscription along the rim at the bottom: «ПЕСЧАННЫЙ СЛЕПЫШ» (SAND MOLE-RAT). The obverse: the two-headed eagle designed by artist I. Bilibin. The inscriptions along the rim: at the top — «ОДИН РУБЛЬ 1996 г.» (ONE RUBLE 1996), at the bottom — «БАНК РОССИИ» (BANK OF RUSSIA). The letters below indicate the metal sign, the fineness, the mint trademark and the fine metal content.
